Through fall 2017, Themester presents Sidewalk Talks, a semester-long event where students, visiting artists, professors, and any interested persons are invited to submit and execute their designs for beautiful sidewalk chalk murals. These murals will follow general themes relating to difference, diversity, and otherness.
The purpose of this event is to publicize issues that people are either unaware of or uncomfortable talking about. The event hopes to spark discussions and conversations about issues with respect to diversity, as well as cultural dissociation, cultural or ethnic protection, and the idea of 'otherness.'
In some cases, passersby are invited to take part in the creation of murals. In all cases, they are invited to respond to the murals through chalk at the site if Sidewalk Talk volunteers are present or through the Instagram hashtag #SidewalkTalksIU, so that the conversation transcends the original media.
